This popular tour combines my Datong itinerary with a journey to Pingyao.
Pingyao is located approximately 700 kilometres southwest of Beijing and 80 kilometres from the provincial capital, Taiyuan. During the Qing Dynasty, Pingyao was a financial centre of China. The ancient city, whose history dates back some 2,700 years and which is renowned for its well-preserved city walls, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major tourist attraction.
Combine this tour with a 2 day excursion to the ancient town of Qikou.
Datong & Pingyao (4 full days)
Day 1: Beijing - Hanging Temple - Datong
- Pick-up from your Beijing accommodation in the early morning, ideally around 6:30 h.
- Have breakfast about one hour into the drive at the town of Changping.
- Continue on the highway to the Hanging Temple , arriving at noon. (Only snacks and fruit available here for lunch.)
- Visit the Hanging Temple for about 2 hours, and, if you like, a local village afterwards.
- Continue to Datong and check into your accommodation.
- Visit either Huayuan Si or Nine Dragons Wall, if time permits.
- Return to accommodation around 16:30 h in time for dinner (optional).
Day 2: Datong - Taiyuan
- Check out of your Datong accommodation after breakfast.
- Visit the Yungang Grottos for about 3 hours in the morning.
- Drive towards Taiyuan.
- Stop at remote original sections of the Great Wall at Yanmenguan (optional).
- Stop at the Tomb of Emperor Han (optional).
- Check into Taiyuan accommodation in the evening and have dinner.
Day 4: Pingyao
- Explore Pingyao's numerous sights. Amazing photo opportunity !
- Take a walk on the ancient city wall.
- Return to Beijing with me by car in the early afternoon (round trip option),
or continue to Xi'an by train (destination tour option).
